Did You Know...?

Here are just some of the reasons why lawn care is important:

  • Aesthetic Value: A well-kept lawn can significantly improve a property's curb appeal. Any property looks more attractive with a lush, healthy grass and landscaping, which is crucial for businesses hoping to create a good first impression on potential customers.
  • Environmental Benefits: Lawns play a crucial role in how we interact with our surrounding landscape. They aid in erosion control by slowing water and filter impurities from the air and soil. Lawns may also benefit wildlife by providing them with natural habitat.
  • Health Benefits: Lawns help reduce noise which is important in residential neighborhoods. Studies have shown that green spaces aid in reducing stress and enhance general mental health. Additionally, by offering a soft and secure playing area for kids and pets, lawns can help lower the chance of injuries from falls.
  • Property Value: Well-kept lawns and landscaping service can help raise property values by making your property more appealing and setting it apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Lawns that have been well landscaped can increase a property's value by up to 10%, according to real estate experts.
  • Pest Control: Regular lawn care services can aid in pest control by limiting the population of weeds, rodents, and insects that make there way to your property. As a result, there will be less of a chance of unwanted pests establishing themselves and lowering the need for pricey pest control services.

Overall, lawn care is crucial for preserving a property's value and aesthetics, safeguarding our neighborhoods and surrounding landscape, and promoting the health and safety of both people and their pets.

Weed Control & Weed Prevention

Keeping a healthy and beautiful lawn requires routine weed management. You can ensure that your lawn and flower beds receive the water and nutrients they require to thrive and stop the spread of pests and illnesses by getting rid of weeds. Due to their competition with grass and other plants for nutrients, sunlight, and water, weeds can be a serious issue for lawns. They can also be eye sores on your property. There are various ways to control weeds, and the ideal strategy will depend on the demands of your outdoor area.

We control and prevent the growth of new weeds before they start growing and promote a healthy lawn by applying fertilizer and other treatments that encourage the growth of grass, flowers, and other ornamentals. Five Common Lawn Care Mistakes

  1. Malnourished Lawn
Grass uses resources to grow throughout the year, but some nutrients are essential at certain times of the seasonal cycle. Your lawn won't look fantastic all year if you don't provide the proper fertilizing. Even dormant lawns can look good if there aren't dead patches of grass or rampant weeds. Four fertilizer treatments per year are recommended, one each in the early spring, late spring, summer, and fall.
  2. Watering Incorrectly
You want the grass in your lawn to grow deep roots. To accomplish this, you should water your lawn deeply and infrequently. A good practice is to water your lawn from between 20 to 60 minutes during 2 to 4 days per week, as opposed to 5 to 10 minutes everyday. Keep in mind that weather plays a role in how often you need to water. If the rain has been an all-day soaker, then you can likely skip a watering. But, if it only rained for a short burst, your lawn is likely still thirsty. Also, if the summer has been hot and dry, your lawn may need a longer watering.
  3. Mower Deck is Too Low
The length of grass blades is tied to how deep the roots grow. Basically, if grass blades are kept too short, there isn't enough energy produced in the blades to grow roots deeply into the soil. Cutting grass too short will result in growth being directed to its blades at the expense of root growth... and shallow roots can lead to health problems at drier times when the water level is low in the soil.

Generally, the ideal height for grass is between 2 to 4 inches and a mower deck should be set to remove no more than one third of the grass blade length at a time.
  4. Weeds!
A single weed can release thousands of seeds. So, you can imagine that weeds can quickly take over a lawn if left unchecked. Unfortunately, spot spraying weeds can leave gaping holes in your lawn that may eventually allow other weeds to step in and take hold. A good practice is to apply a fertilizer that not only controls weeds but also provides nutrients to your lawn.
  5. Expecting Too Much from Your New Lawn
We know. You want your perfect lawn and you want it now! Well, it takes time to grow a healthy lawn. It can take anywhere from one to two weeks for a grass seed to germinate and several more weeks for grass to fill the gaps. It helps to watch the weather and not plant too close to a heavy rainstorm. Also, use good quality seed and be sure to follow the planting instructions.

And there you have it! These are 5 of the biggest lawn care mistakes, but there's much more that goes into maintaining a long-lasting, attractive lawn. Don't want to deal with the hassle of all that upkeep? Don't worry. We have you covered! Contact us today and we'll set your lawn on the right path to looking its best.

Lawn Care To Do List

Creating and following a lawn care to-do list is essential for maintaining your lawn throughout the year.

Here's a comprehensive guide:

Spring:

  1. Clean Up: Remove any debris such as leaves, sticks, branches, trash that's blown in, and any other winter coverings from your lawn.
  2. Dethatching: It was a long, rough winter on your lawn. If needed, remove patchy, dead areas to improve air circulation.
  3. Aeration: Help your lawn take a deep breath. Aerate the soil to reduce compaction and improve water and nutrient absorption.
  4. Fertilize: Give your lawn a head start. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote spring growth.
  5. Weed Control: Apply pre-emergent herbicides - the sooner you stop competition with weeds, the better off your lawn will be.
  6. Overseed: Fill in bare patches with grass seed for a thicker lawn.
  7. Mowing: Start regular mowing, adjusting the height based on the grass type. Remember not to remove too much grass blade length!

Summer:

  1. Watering: Water deeply and infrequently in the morning to prevent diseases. Let the water slowly seep into the soil.
  2. Mowing: Continue regular mowing and avoid cutting the grass too short.
  3. Fertilize: Time to apply another round of slow-release fertilizer to sustain growth.
  4. Weed Control: Monitor for weeds and spot-treat as necessary.
  5. Pest Control: Pests are sneaky. Be vigilant!
  6. Grub Control: Apply grub control treatments if necessary.
  7. Disease Prevention: Watch for signs of diseases and apply fungicides if needed.

Fall:

  1. Raking: Regularly rake leaves to prevent matting and fungal issues. This is a great time for another yard clean up.
  2. Fertilize: Apply a winterizing fertilizer to promote root health. Your lawn slows down in the winter, but there are still things happening under the hood, as they say.
  3. Overseed: If necessary, overseed for thicker grass. Choosing the right seed type can be confusing. Give us a call. :)
  4. Aeration: Although not always necessary, aerate again if your lawn has heavy foot traffic.
  5. Weed Control: Apply post-emergent herbicides for persistent weeds.
  6. Mowing: Gradually lower mowing height as grass growth slows.
  7. Equipment Maintenance: If you're doing your own lawn care, you've spent your hard earned money on that equipment. Be sure to clean your gear to ensure it lasts the long haul. We sure do!

Winter:

  1. Final Cleanup: Remove any remaining debris and ensure the lawn is clear. Mowing leaves is a great way to return nutrients to your lawn.
  2. Limit Foot Traffic: Minimize walking on frozen grass to prevent damage.

Year-round:

  1. Soil Testing: Your lawn is a complicated little ecosystem. Conduct periodic soil tests to assess nutrient levels.
  2. Lawn Inspections: Regularly inspect for pests, diseases, and other issues. Get out and mosey around your lawn. Enjoy it!
  3. Mulching: Mulch around trees and garden beds for moisture retention. Your landscaping and water bill will thank you.
  4. Irrigation System: If you have irrigation, check and maintain it regularly.
  5. Professional Services: Does that seem like too much? Consider our professional services for specialized treatments or advice!

By following this lawn care to-do list, you'll ensure your lawn remains healthy, lush, and beautiful throughout the seasons.

Weed Control in Mount Airy, NC

All lawns are prone to growing weeds, but there are some steps that you can take to lessen the chances that they take hold in your lawn. Here are some tips to get rid of those pesky weeds.

Identify the Type of Weed:
Each type of weed has its specific method of control. So, the first step in weed control is knowing which weed you're dealing with. There are several lawn weeds common to the Mount Airy area, including crabgrass, dandelions, clover, and plantain.

Weed Specific Treatment:
Broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, are best treated with the use of a chemical herbicide that targets broadleaf plants. In other cases, pre-emergent herbicides can be used to prevent the germination and growth of a weed. Crabgrass is a grassy weed that can be prevented with the use of pre-emergent herbicides.

Prevent Future Weed Growth:
Once weeds are under control, you'll want to continue with regular lawn care maintenance to ensure your lawn is healthy. This includes regular mowing and watering deeply. Applying fertilizer can also give your lawn a healthy boost. The healthier your lawn, the less chance you give weeds to establish.

How to care for your lawn during the summer heat in Mount Airy, NC

  1. Watering
Remember to keep your lawn watered. It's best to water in the early morning and preferable slowly, deeply, and infrequently. Applying this watering schedule helps prevent evaporation through the day and allows the grass to dry before evening. Allowing the lawn to dry before nightfall reduces the risk of fungal diseases. You should try to aim for about 1-1.5 inches of water per week and be sure to include rainfall in that calculation.
  2. Mowing
As we mentioned previously, be sure to set your mower blade to a higher setting, which promotes more vigorous and drought-tolerant grass. Taller grass has several benefits by blocking the sun from the soil, reducing the amount of water evaporating from the soil, and helping to prevent weed growth. Mow your lawn when the grass is dry to prevent damage to the turf and never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
  3. Fertilizing
Applying slow-release, balanced fertilizer in late spring or early summer will set the stage for a healthy summer lawn when temperatures rise and rain is more sporadic.
  4. Weed control
Watch out for weeds! We suggest hand-pulling or spot-treating with herbicides to control most weeds without damaging surrounding grass. As we've mentioned, identifying the types of weeds in your lawn will lead you to making the right choice in control methods.
  5. Managing pests
Lawn pests are sneaky. Watch for their signs and, if necessary, consult with a professional to identify and treat any issues that may arise.
  6. Providing shade
Shade trees, umbrellas, or awnings each provide shade for parts of your lawn that receive intense sunlight. Protecting your grass from abundant sun exposure is important to reduce heat stress and water evaporation.
  7. Aeration
Lawns that receive heavy foot traffic are prone to soil compaction. Aerating during the summer months helps improve air circulation, water absorption, and nutrient uptake in the soil.
  8. Regular maintenance
Lawns can be smothered when leaves, branches, lawn clippings, and the like are allowed to sit for long periods of time. Regularly removing debris will help reduce the chances of any diseases or die-offs.

Remember, it's important to adapt your lawn care routine to fit your lawn's needs. We can provide further guidance and ensure your lawn stays healthy all summer long!
